Steel Curtain

The Steel Curtain came down on the Broncos season yesterday. The Steelers had an excellent game plan, played extremely hard, and took advantage of the opportunities given to them. I still can't believe how many third down conversions they made in the first half. The only time the Broncos stopped them, they settled for a fied goal. QB Ben Roethlisberger picked on rookie cornerback Domonique Foxworth for much of the game. Despite the wupping, I am impressed that the Broncos kept fighting and did not give up.

Also, I want to add that I am actually in agreement with something that Skip Bayless, one of the worst sports writers/talking heads in the budsiness for the ESPN.com's Page 2 story he wrote. No, not the annoying bit about the Jakes, but his comments on the near interception by Bailey. The Broncos missed at least three chances for interceptions, which could have swayed momentum of the game.

Still, if ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a very merry Super Bowl. The Steelers executed the game plan flawlessly and beat the Broncos solidly.

Beer Pong

I don't think these guys could have beat Andrew Scott and Dave Hill circa 1999-2000.

Niall is Fertile!

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Scientists in Ireland may have found the country's most fertile male, with more than 3 million men worldwide among his offspring.

The scientists, from Trinity College Dublin, have discovered that as many as one in twelve Irish men could be descended from Niall of the Nine Hostages, a 5th-century warlord who was head of the most powerful dynasty in ancient Ireland.

His genetic legacy is almost as impressive as Genghis Khan, the Mongol emperor who conquered most of Asia in the 13th century and has nearly 16 million descendants, said Dan Bradley, who supervised the research.

"It's another link between profligacy and power," Bradley told Reuters. "We're the first generation on the planet where if you're successful you don't (always) have more children."

The research was carried out by PhD student Laoise Moore, at the Smurfit Institute of Genetics at Trinity. Moore, testing the Y chromosome which is passed on from fathers to sons, examined DNA samples from 800 males across Ireland.

The results -- which have been published in the American Journal of Human Genetics -- showed the highest concentration of related males in northwest Ireland, where one in five males had the same Y chromosome.

Bradley said the results reminded the team of a similar study in central Asia, where scientists found 8 percent of men with the same Y chromosome. Subsequent studies found they shared the same chromosome as the dynasty linked to Genghis Khan.

GENGHIS KHAN EFFECT

"It made us wonder if there could be some sort of Genghis Khan effect in Ireland and the best candidate for it was Niall," Bradley said.

His team then consulted with genealogical experts who provided them with a contemporary list of people with surnames that are genealogically linked to the last known relative of the "Ui Neill" dynasty, which literally means descendants of Niall.

The results showed the new group had the same chromosome as those in the original sample, proving a link between them and the Niall descendents.

"The frequency (of the Y chromosome) was significantly higher in that genealogical group than any other group we tested," said Bradley, whose surname is also linked to the medieval warlord. Other modern surnames tracing their ancestry to Niall include Gallagher, Boyle, O'Donnell and O'Doherty.

For added proof, the scientists used special techniques to age the Y chromosome, according to how many mutations had occurred in the genetic material over time. The number of mutations was found to be in accordance with chromosomes that would date back to the last known living relative of Niall.

Niall reportedly had 12 sons, many of whom became powerful Irish kings themselves. But because he lived in the 5th century, there have been doubts the king -- who is said to have brought the country's patron saint, Patrick, to Ireland -- even existed.

"Before I would have said that characters like Niall were almost mythological, like King Arthur, but this actually puts flesh on the bones," Bradley said.

When international databases were checked, the chromosome also turned up in roughly 2 percent of all male New Yorkers.

Go Broncos!

The Broncos pulled out the big win on Saturday against the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. I was lucky enough to go to the game (thanks Joe), and it was a blast. I must add that the crowd did a great job of being loud and helped to cause 4 false starts and a couple of timeouts with the noise.

Most of the sports commentators and writers (the same ones who picked the Pats to win) are saying the Pats lost the game due to their turnovers. From what I saw, the pressure and intensity of the Broncos defense and special teams won the game. The Broncos forced the turnovers - the Pats didn't just give the ball away. As Patriots defensive end Richard Seymour (the best player on their defense) said, "Denver caused a lot of those mistakes. I don't care what anybody says -- you have to give them credit." They also managed to hold the Pats to 13 points due to the heavy pressure they put on Brady.

Now, thanks to the Steelers, the Broncos get another playoff game at home. Let's hope that the offense can do more against the Steelers than they did against the Pats. They capitalized off the New England turnovers, scoring 24 of their 27 points off of turnovers. The offense will need to generate its own points to win the game.

I can't remember the playoffs having this many good coaches in a long time. If you look at the head coaches in the round of eight, there were a total of 13 Super Bowl appearances with 9 wins. All four of the coaches remaining have taken teams to the Super Bowl in the past.

I also want to note that Roosevelt Colvin is a tool. He did this stupid kicking motion when the Pats defense stopped the Broncos on third down that looked like an eighty year old woman imitating the Rockettes. I especially liked it when he did it right before the Broncos kicked a field goal to take a 10-3 lead. Yes, we know the Broncos are going to kick, you don't need to show us, jackass. Also, at the end of the game when the Broncos had sealed the win, he had to be the a-hole who starts something when the other team kneels to run out the clock. Why is there always a player on a losing team that has to start something when the game is almost over and they know the game is lost?

Swamp Man

At first, I thought this man was nuts for not wanting to move, especially for almost $5 mill. But after watching the interview with him, I can understand not wanting to leave.

TV Addiction

I have a guilty pleasure. It is called The O.C.. You know how there are certain things that you joke about liking in an ironic kind of a way. I used to do that about The O.C. Now, I must admit that I honestly like it. I would even put it up there with Entourage and Lost. I really appreciated tonight's episode with its reference to another classic television show, Beverly Hills, 90210. Seth and Summer were holding a sign that said, "Marissa Cooper Graduates!" How classic is it that the writers paid homage to the original and ultimate teen show? They have done a great job giving the characters little quirks and eccentricities, and Sandy Cohen might be a better TV Dad than Jim Walsh. They actually have some pretty good music on the show. Beck, Sufjan Stevens, Low, and U2 are a few of the acts whose music has been used on the show. Deathcab for Cutie and Modest Mouse even performed on the show. That was almost as surprising as when The Flaming Lips performed at the Peach Pit. Also, is it just me, or did Marissa Cooper get way hotter all of a sudden?

Judicial Nominee

There is something (actually a few things) about Judge Samuel Alito, Bush's nominee for the supreme court, that just doesn't sit right with me. It probably has to do with the previous errors and mistakes that the Bush administration has made. I have little or no faith in what they do. I still can't believe how convenient and timely a nomination this is for the Bush administration. Right when Bush is coming under attack for exceeded the powers granted to him by US law, he has a nominee who doesn't seem to have a problem with giving him more power. Here is an interesting editorial from USA Today.
