Poll Results

The latest poll that I ran was about the Broncos and who they whould attempt to acquire in the offseason. Here are the results.

Selection Votes
Ricky Williams, MIA 1
Terrell Owens, PHI 1
John Abraham, NYJ 3
Ryan Leaf 0
5 votes total

Well, TO signed with the Cowboys, it doesn't look as though the Dolphins will part with Ricky, and the Falcons acquired John Abraham. The Broncos were involved in the three team deal involving Abraham.

Denver traded its 2006 first-round pick (29th overall), its 2006 third-round pick, and its 2007 fourth-round pick to Atlanta for the Falcons' first-round pick (15th overall) in this year's draft. The Falcons were unwilling to part with their first-round pick without getting more compensation, and the deal with Denver got them something to use later in the draft. Denver now has the 15th and 22nd (via Washington) picks in April's draft. The Jets would not deal Abraham for anything less than a first-round pick. Atlanta traded the 29th overall pick obtained from the Broncos to the Jets for Abraham.

March Madness

Last year, I wrote a post saying that the 2005 NCAA Mens Basketball tournament was the craziest that I had ever seen. But I found myself thinking the same thing this year. I came to the realization that it is crazy every year. Upsets are to be expected, last minute shots will be made, the competition is intense, and it always seems as though your office bracket is busted after the first two rounds. That is why it is such a great sports event.

Daily Show

The Daily Show does an excellent job of using satire to make a point and raise awareness about politics in this country. I am currently sans cable and thus do not get to watch it anymore. It sucks. However, the folks over at www.crooksandliars.com posted a clip from the show that I wanted to share with the five of you who read this.

Advisor to Bush Charged with Theft

The top domestic policy adviser to President Bush has been charged with theft for allegedly receiving phony refunds at department stores. Claude Allen would purchase items at a store such as Target, take the items to his car, return to the store with his receipt, pick up the same item that he had purchased, and take it to customer service for a refund, pocketing the money. He is believed to have performed 25 of these types of scams. Allen resigned abruptly on Feb. 9, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family. Sure.

Allen, who was a rising star in the Republican party, had previously been nominated by Bush to a judicial position on the U.S. Court of Appeals, 4th Circuit. The nomination reportedly did not make it to vote in the Senate due to his lack of judicial experience, strong views, and connection with the religious right. After the failed nomination, he worked for the White House and was named as top domestic policy adviser in the White House last year. Allen reportedly was paid $161,000 per year working for the White House.

A Little Accountability

As those of you who read this blog know, I have some major issues with the current lack of accountability in our Federal government. Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold has similar issues with government and announced that he will introduce a resolution in the U.S. Senate today to censure the President of the United States.

Censure is a congressional procedure for reprimanding the President of the United States or a member of Congress for inappropriate behavior. It is formal way of stating that an individual screwed up and actions need to be taken to correct those screw ups. Feingold's intention is to bring awareness to the NSA wiretapping and produce measures to protect the civil liberties of US citizens.

Give your Senator a call to let him know if you agree with Feingold.

Cruelly funny

Cal fans pulled a prank on USC point guard Gabe Pruitt during their game last weekend. Students were heard chanting "VIC-TO-RIA" throughout the game, much to the confusion of others in the arena.

The reason for this was Cal students created an AOL instant messenger identity for a UCLA co-ed named Victoria. The students began corresponding with the USC point guard on AOL instant messenger and there were plans to meet up for a date after the game.

The Cal fans first started cheering "Victoria" when Pruitt went to the free throw line. A 78% free throw shooter, he missed 'em both and there was a look of shock on his face. Fans also started reciting his phone number, which he had provided during his IM sessions, and passed out transcripts of the conversations.

Needless to say, Pruitt did not have a good game and USC lost.

Bush Caught in a Lie

After Katrina, Bush told reporters that no one could have known that the levees were going to break. However, footage has been released of the days prior to Katrina hitting New Orleans that shows federal disaster officials briefing President Bush and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff on the potential catastrophies that could occur, including the levee system failing.

I'm Jake Plummer?

If you have some time to spare today, I would recommend reading today's column by the Sports Guy (ESPN's Bill Simmons). He interviews Malcolm Gladwell, author of Blink and The Tipping Point. I recently read Blink and highly recommend it for anyone who is interested in decision making and thought processes. In the interview, they do an entertaining analysis of Jake Plummer and the Broncos. Must read for Broncos' fans.

Sex Panther

I am sure that by now, many of you have heard about the merger that would give the United Arab Emirates owned company control of operations at six U.S. ports. Much has been made of the lack of review by the government in approving the deal, the connections between members of the administration and the companies involved, and the UAE poor history of combating terrorism. But that isn't the problem that we have. The real issue is that port security is lacking throughout the USA, and our borders are not secure. At a White House press briefing, Scott McClellan said that 100% of cargo is screened. Actually, only cargo manifests are screened. Cargo that is deemed high rish is then inspected. That typically amounts to only 5%. So 100% of 5% is inspected. It kind of reminds me of Sex Panther cologne, "They've done studies you know- 60% of the time, it works every time." Boy, it sure is a good thing that terrorists don't know have to forge cargo manifests. Obviously, all the cargo cannot be inspected by additional technology and more security workers are needed to prevent items such as a nuclear weapon from being shipped into this country.
